Study Questions Usefulness of Mayor’s Energy Proposal

June 27, 2013
Professor Robert Stavins

In a recent “Boston Globe” article, professor Robert N. Stavins outlines a report that responds to a proposal to require monitoring and reporting to promote energy efficiency.

The proposal, which was put forth by Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, calls for programs that require commercial property owners to monitor and publicly report energy and water consumption in their buildings. Stavins compared the proposal to experiences in other cities with similar programs and found that any energy savings are likely to be negligible.
